Best Car Insurance Companies of 2026

By YesWeSure EditorialReviewed September 26, 2026Editorial standardsAdvertiser disclosureSources

There is no single "best car insurance" carrier. The right answer depends on your driving record, credit, state, whether you want a local agent, and whether you have military-community eligibility. Below is our featured shortlist of eight national and regional carriers we evaluated for this V1, matched to the specific situations they fit. More carriers will be added over time.

Advertiser disclosure

YesWeSure may receive compensation from some carriers listed on this page when readers click a quote link or purchase a policy. Compensation does not influence which carriers we cover, the evidence-anchored "featured for" tags we assign, the facts we publish, or the scenarios in which we recommend each carrier. Card display order may be influenced by commercial arrangements; when a specific carrier card is sponsored, a visible "Sponsored" label appears on that card. For V1 of this page, no cards are sponsored. See our full advertiser disclosure and editorial standards.

Deeper situations

More situations, more nuance

The Quick Shortlist near the top covers the situations most shoppers land on. These additional scenarios go a little deeper. Each row is anchored to a cited source; where the evidence doesn't defensibly support one carrier over another, we recommend quoting a couple of candidates rather than picking a winner.

  • Teen or young driver (18–20)
    GEICO
Two same-methodology comparisons show GEICO significantly cheaper than a major direct competitor on full-coverage teen profiles13.
  • Bad credit (state permitting)
    Quote at least three
Publisher rate analyses disagree on which carrier wins here. Get quotes from GEICO, Progressive, and one regional carrier in your state13.
  • Coverage breadth (gap, custom parts)
    Progressive
Publishes gap insurance and custom parts and equipment coverage that many national competitors don't offer13.
  • Highest telematics upside (safe drivers)
    Progressive Snapshot
Progressive publishes an average completion discount of $328 on Snapshot. The trade-off is Progressive's own disclosure that about 2 in 10 drivers pay more11.
  • Telematics with less downside risk
    Depends on state
GEICO's DriveEasy program can raise rates in some states and not others; read the state addendum before enrolling12.
  • High overall customer-satisfaction reputation
    Amica
NerdWallet's April 2026 analysis named Amica its top overall pick, citing financial strength, customer experience, and coverage options8.
  • Cheapest minimum coverage (non-USAA)
    Consider regional carriers
NerdWallet's April 2026 analysis found Mapfre ($35/mo) and Auto-Owners ($37/mo) cheaper than large-national averages for minimum coverage. Coverage from these carriers depends on your state7.
  • Highest-tier financial strength (A++)
    GEICO, USAA, Travelers
All three carry AM Best A++ (Superior). State Farm was downgraded to A+ from A++ on November 14, 2025 after five consecutive years of underwriting losses; Erie was downgraded to A (Excellent) from A+ on September 5, 202536.

These are evidence-anchored leans, not personalized advice. Your real decision depends on your quote in your state.

What we verified for this shortlist

  • StrongAM Best financial-strength ratings. Tier 1: affirmations and downgrades read from AM Best releases or reputable Tier-2 news of AM Best actions. Every rating on this page is dated.
  • StrongJ.D. Power 2025 Auto Claims Satisfaction #1. Erie's top rank and 743 score verified across multiple reputable Tier-3 summaries of the study.
  • StrongProgressive Snapshot mechanics. Tier 1: Progressive's own page for the $328 average completion discount, $164 sign-up discount, and the "about 2 in 10 drivers get an increase" disclosure.
  • ModerateSample rate anchors. Tier 3 with transparent methodology: NerdWallet's April 2026 analysis via Quadrant Information Services, 35-year-old driver profile, 2023 Toyota Camry LE, 12,000 annual miles.
  • ModerateAmica AM Best rating. Widely reported as A+ Superior; direct AM Best confirmation not extracted this pass. Reported here as "A+ (Superior) reported" and flagged for primary verification before broad launch.
  • ModerateNAIC complaint indices per carrier. Publisher aggregations diverge (documented in the frozen Provider Review and vs-page). Readers directed to NAIC CIS for their state.

How we picked, and how commercial placement works

How we picked the carriers on this page

We featured eight national and regional carriers with meaningful U.S. personal-auto footprints and enough independent evidence (AM Best ratings, J.D. Power studies, NAIC complaint data summarized by reputable publishers, and third-party rate analyses) to describe them accurately. This is a shortlist of carriers evaluated for V1, not a claim about the entire market. More carriers will be added over time as we cover them with the same evidence discipline. Payment does not decide who appears.

How we assigned "featured for" tags

Each carrier's tag is anchored to evidence cited on this page. USAA is featured for eligible military-community members because rate analyses consistently put it cheapest for that community. GEICO is featured for broad-choice standard profiles because multiple Tier-3 analyses put it competitive there. Erie is featured for claims satisfaction because it ranked #1 in the J.D. Power 2025 Claims Satisfaction Study. The tags are evidence, not commercial rank. They do not change if a card moves.

How commercial placement works

YesWeSure may earn compensation from some carriers when a reader clicks a quote link or purchases a policy. Later in this site's lifecycle, a placement engine may order the carrier cards based on commercial variables such as advertiser payout, earnings per click, conversion performance, campaign configuration, or buyer value. That commercial ordering influences where cards appear. It does not change any of the following: which carriers we cover, the evidence-anchored "featured for" tag on each carrier, the AM Best ratings, the complaint attributions, the J.D. Power standings, or the scenarios in which we recommend a carrier. If a specific card is sponsored, a visible "Sponsored" label appears on it. For this V1 page, no cards are sponsored.

What is not on this page

We do not publish a composite "X out of Y" rating for carriers. We have not designed a formal YesWeSure Provider Score methodology yet, and shipping one without a real methodology would repeat the exact problem consumers see across other best-of pages. When a formal methodology exists, it will be published separately and versioned.

Common questions

What actually makes an insurer "best"?

There is no single "best." The right answer depends on your profile (record, credit, age), your state, whether you want a local agent, and whether you have USAA eligibility. This page matches carriers to situations rather than crowning one winner.

How did you pick the carriers on this list?

We featured eight national and regional carriers with enough independent evidence (AM Best ratings, J.D. Power studies, NAIC-derived complaint data via reputable publishers, and Tier-3 rate analyses) to describe them accurately. Payment did not determine coverage.

Do you get paid by the insurers?

Yes, YesWeSure may receive compensation from some carriers when readers click a quote link or purchase a policy. Compensation does not change which carriers we cover or the editorial "featured for" tag each one receives. When a card is sponsored, a visible label appears. For this V1, no cards are sponsored. See our advertiser disclosure above and our editorial standards.

Is USAA available to civilians?

No. USAA sells to active-duty military members, veterans, and immediate family members of eligible service members. If you're not eligible, USAA is not available to you.

Why does State Farm show A+ instead of A++ this year?

AM Best downgraded State Farm Mutual Automobile Insurance Company and its affiliates from A++ to A+ on November 14, 2025, after five consecutive years of underwriting losses driven by tough auto and home results, heavy catastrophe losses, and regulatory constraints on rate approvals. A+ is still in the "Superior" tier; the trajectory is worth watching.

Why did Erie's AM Best rating change?

AM Best downgraded Erie Insurance Group's property/ casualty members from A+ (Superior) to A (Excellent) on September 5, 2025, revising the outlook to stable, citing elevated weather-related losses and increased severity in auto and homeowners lines. This does not change Erie's J.D. Power 2025 Claims Satisfaction ranking.

Should I always pick the highest-rated carrier?

Not necessarily. Financial-strength ratings speak to the carrier's ability to pay claims under stress. They do not tell you who is cheapest for your profile or who provides the best claims experience. Use ratings as one input, then weigh price, coverage, complaints, and claims satisfaction.

How often do you update this page?

We aim to review the shortlist at least semi-annually. Rate datasets refresh monthly, J.D. Power studies publish annually, AM Best actions occur throughout the year, and NAIC data updates annually. The "Reviewed" date at the top of the page reflects the last substantive review.
