State Farm Car Insurance Review
State Farm is the largest U.S. private-passenger auto insurer by NAIC 2025 direct-premiums-earned data and runs an exclusive agent-first distribution model that some drivers actively prefer and others actively do not. In November 2025 AM Best downgraded the group's Financial Strength Rating to A+ (Superior) from A++, an event worth naming rather than skipping over. Drive Safe & Save, State Farm's telematics program, can move your premium in either direction rather than only offering a discount. Whether State Farm wins your business depends on your state, your driver profile, and how a real quote compares against two or three alternatives.
YesWeSure Bottom Line
State Farm's evidence points to top-of-market scale and a long-tenure exclusive-agent network, tempered by a November 2025 AM Best downgrade and a telematics program that adjusts premium in either direction.

Watch for
The November 2025 AM Best downgrade and regional score slippage
AM Best downgraded State Farm's FSR to A+ (Superior) from A++ on November 14, 2025, citing adverse underwriting in personal auto and homeowners1. State Farm's average across 11 regions in the 2025 J.D. Power U.S. Auto Insurance Study fell to 650 from 657, with scores down in seven of eleven regions11. State Farm does not offer gap coverage2.
Worth comparing if
Agent-first shoppers and telematics-curious drivers
State Farm tends to be worth a quote if you prefer a named local agent for policy servicing and claims handoff5, want Drive Safe & Save with a published maximum discount of up to 30% and clear eyes about its rate-adjustment mechanics4, or prioritize a discount menu that includes a Good Student savings of up to 25%3.
Quote-dependent
State rules, Drive Safe & Save geography, and entity mix
Your premium, whether Drive Safe & Save is available where you live (not offered in California, Massachusetts, or Rhode Island; conditional in North Carolina; capped at 30% in New York)4, exact discount amounts (many are "up to" averages3), and which State Farm underwriting entity writes your policy in your state13.

Strengths & considerations
Strengths
- Scale. Largest U.S. private-passenger auto insurer by NAIC 2025 full-year direct-premiums-earned data8.
- Exclusive agent network. Approximately 19,000 agents across the country provide a named local point of contact for policy servicing and claims5.
- Regional J.D. Power leadership pockets.State Farm ranked No. 1 in the Northwest region and remains in the top 10 in every region of the 2025 U.S. Auto Insurance Study, per publisher secondary reporting11.
- Discount breadth. Published maximums include Drive Safe & Save up to 30%4, Good Student up to 25%3, and Passive Restraint up to 40% on medical-related coverage3.
- Mutual structure. Policyholder-owned rather than shareholder-owned; State Farm is not required to balance policyholder outcomes against equity-market pressure5.
Considerations
- Recent AM Best downgrade. AM Best downgraded State Farm's FSR from A++ (Superior) to A+ (Superior) on November 14, 2025; adverse underwriting in personal auto and homeowners was named in the rating action1.
- Regional score slippage. State Farm's average across 11 regions in the 2025 J.D. Power U.S. Auto Insurance Study fell to 650 from 657, with scores down in seven of eleven regions, per publisher secondary reporting11.
- No gap coverage. State Farm's auto page states that gap insurance is typically offered by the auto loan provider and is not part of the State Farm coverage menu2.
- Drive Safe & Save can raise your premium.State Farm re-adjusts premium at each renewal using up to the prior 12 months of data; the adjustment can be a discount or a surcharge4.
- Underwriting-entity complexity. State Farm writes personal auto through several separately rated underwriting subsidiaries; NAIC complaint indices are reported per company per state, so a single national number papers over meaningful variation13.
What we verified
- STRONGFinancial strength. Tier 1: AM Best press release documenting the November 14, 2025 downgrade to A+ (Superior) FSR and "aa" (Superior) Long-Term ICR1.
- STRONGMarket position. Tier 3 secondary reporting of NAIC 2025 full-year direct-premiums-earned data (State Farm 18.64%)8 plus Tier 2 S&P GMI trailing-twelve-month estimate9.
- STRONGDrive Safe & Save mechanics. Tier 1: enrollment via State Farm mobile app plus a mailed Bluetooth beacon, tracked behaviors (acceleration, braking, cornering, phone distraction, speed over posted by 8+ mph, mileage), up-to-30% published maximum, renewal-based rate adjustment that can go up or down, and CA / MA / RI carve-outs all come from State Farm's own Drive Safe & Save page4.
- STRONGCoverage set and the "no gap" statement.Tier 1: State Farm's auto page names liability, comprehensive, collision, and uninsured / underinsured motorist and states that gap insurance is not offered2.
- MODERATEModeled premiums. Tier 3 with disclosed publishers: NerdWallet September 2026 review6and ValuePenguin7. Modeled rates, not personalized quotes; publisher divergence is significant because profile assumptions differ.
- MODERATEJ.D. Power standings. Tier 2 J.D. Power press-release landing pages for the 2025 Auto Insurance Study and 2025 Auto Claims Satisfaction Study1012, plus Tier 3 secondary reporting of regional scores11. Direct access to full study data was not available during audit.
- MODERATEComplaint index. Tier 1 methodology: NAIC Consumer Information Source describes the market-share- adjusted ratio13. The number that applies to you depends on which State Farm subsidiary writes in your state; no single national aggregate is published on this page.
- LIMITEDS&P Global Ratings. A current publicly-identifiable S&P affirmation for State Farm Mutual Automobile Insurance Company was not located during this audit. The At-a-Glance slot is populated with AM Best's Long-Term Issuer Credit Rating instead of an invented S&P entry.
Coverage options
State Farm's public auto page names the standard building blocks and explicitly discloses one gap in its menu. The set below is drawn directly from statefarm.com/insurance/auto2.
- Liability. Bodily injury and property damage. State minimum limits vary; higher limits generally available.
- Comprehensive. Non-collision damage (theft, vandalism, weather, animal strikes).
- Collision. Damage to your vehicle from an impact with another vehicle or object.
- Uninsured / underinsured motorist. Required or optional depending on state.
- Gap coverage. Not offered by State Farm on the main auto page. State Farm suggests the reader's auto loan provider is the usual source for this coverage2. If you finance or lease a vehicle and expect the lender to require gap-style coverage, verify with your lender that a third-party gap product is acceptable.
State Farm also offers commonly-bundled endorsements such as emergency road service, car rental and travel expenses coverage, and rideshare driver coverage in some states. Availability, limits, and state-specific rules vary; confirm with a State Farm agent before you assume any add-on is on your policy.
Discounts
State Farm publishes a discount page with named programs. The list below preserves State Farm's own wording where a specific figure or restriction is stated on statefarm.com/insurance/auto/discounts3. Actual discount amounts vary by state, insurance history, and eligibility.
- Drive Safe & Save. Initial discount for enrolling; up to 30% based on how you drive; not available in California, Massachusetts, or Rhode Island; a discount may not be available in North Carolina depending on individual facts; New York capped at 30%34.
- Steer Clear. A program aimed at drivers under 25 or new drivers, structured around learning safer driving habits3.
- Bundle and save. Additional savings when multiple State Farm products are on the household's account3.
- Defensive driving course. Available where the reader's state allows the discount3.
- Good driver. Three or more years without moving violations or at-fault accidents; applies to new State Farm Mutual customers3.
- Good Student. Full-time high school or college students who maintain a 3.0+ GPA, rank in the top 20% of their class, or make the Dean's List; up to 25%; may last until the teen turns 253.
- Driver Training. For operators under 21 who complete an approved driver-education course3.
- Student Away at School. Students under 25 attending school using the insured vehicle only during vacations or holidays3.
- Vehicle safety savings. For vehicles with the latest safety features and driver-assist technology3.
- Passive restraint. Up to 40% on medical-related coverage for factory-installed air bag or other passive restraint systems3.
- Anti-theft. For vehicles with an approved alarm or anti-theft device3.
Drive Safe & Save
Drive Safe & Save is State Farm's usage-based-insurance program. Enrollment happens in the State Farm mobile app and is supplemented by a Bluetooth beacon that State Farm mails to the customer; the beacon is placed in the vehicle and paired with the app4.
What Drive Safe & Save tracks. State Farm documents six categories on its own page: acceleration events described as starting fast off the line or accelerating faster than is generally considered safe; braking described as fast, hard stops; cornering described as quick, sharp turns; phone distraction, defined as the phone moving while the vehicle is moving and the phone screen is on; speed exceeding the posted limit by 8 miles per hour or more; and annual mileage (excluded from premium adjustment on certain policies in certain states)4.
What Drive Safe & Save offers on the upside. An initial discount for enrolling and up to 30% based on how the driver actually drives; some states permit discounts above 30%, while New York is capped at 30%4.
What Drive Safe & Save can do on the downside.State Farm re-adjusts premium at each policy renewal (typically every six months) using driving information from up to the prior 12 months. The adjustment can be a discount or a surcharge; State Farm specifically notes that if mileage exceeds 7,500 miles annually, premium may increase4. That is a meaningful difference from telematics programs that only offer a discount.
Where Drive Safe & Save is available. Not offered in California, Massachusetts, or Rhode Island; a discount may not be available in North Carolina depending on individual facts and circumstances4. The exact rules and eligibility for the program in your state are governed by the State Farm program materials attached to the policy where the program is offered.
Pricing
Independent modeled-rate publishers periodically calibrate a same-methodology sample rate for each major insurer to make cross-carrier comparison possible. Two anchors we treated as current at review time:
- NerdWallet, September 2026. Modeled full- coverage premium averaging $2,005 per year($167 per month) for State Farm. NerdWallet's national modeled full-coverage average in the same analysis is about $2,344 per year ($195 per month)6. Modeled by NerdWallet using its own methodology; not a quote.
- ValuePenguin. Reports a State Farm full- coverage average of about $192 per month, which the publisher describes as roughly 8% below the national average per its methodology7. Modeled by ValuePenguin; not a quote.
How to read these numbers. Modeled rates are not personalized quotes. Different publishers use different profile assumptions (age, ZIP band, vehicle, coverage limits) and will not agree to the dollar. The value of quoting these numbers is that they anchor State Farm within the ballpark of the national modeled average, not that they predict your specific renewal. Your actual premium depends on your state, your ZIP, your vehicle, your driving and insurance history, credit-based insurance scoring where state law allows it, and whether you enroll in Drive Safe & Save.
Claims experience
Claims outcomes are the hardest thing to fairly summarise for a large national auto insurer because the answer depends on your state, your adjuster, and the specific circumstances of the loss. What we can surface:
- J.D. Power publishes an annual U.S. Auto Claims Satisfaction Study; the 2025 edition landing page is publicly available on J.D. Power's press-release site12. We were not able to directly access full study-level standings for a specific State Farm rank at review time, so we do not publish one on this page.
- State Farm's exclusive-agent model routes many claims interactions through the agent's office as well as the central claims operation; that arrangement is a meaningful difference from direct-only carriers when you already have a relationship with a specific State Farm agent5.
Before you shop, ask any carrier for its state-level claim closing timelines, the escalation process if you disagree with an estimate, and how the appraisal clause works in your policy. Those details tend to matter more when you actually have a claim than a national survey average.
Customer experience
Regional customer-satisfaction standings. In the 2025 J.D. Power U.S. Auto Insurance Study, State Farm ranked No. 1 in the Northwest region with a score of 648. Its average across the 11 regions fell to 650 in 2025 from 657 in 2024, with scores down in seven of eleven regions. State Farm remained in the top 10 in every region on the Overall Customer Satisfaction Index, per publisher secondary reporting11.
Shopping experience. State Farm ranked third nationally in the 2025 J.D. Power U.S. Insurance Shopping Study (behind Erie Insurance and Auto Club Group), per publisher secondary reporting11.
App-store ratings and support-center wait times drift over time and vary by state, so we do not publish a single number for either. If you are choosing between State Farm and one or two alternatives, run the mobile app and try a real quote flow with an agent before you decide.
Complaints and regulatory record
The NAIC publishes a market-share-adjusted complaint index that is widely used to compare insurers of very different sizes. A value of 1.0 is the market-share-adjusted average across NAIC reporting; a value below 1.0 means the insurer had fewer complaints than its market share alone would predict for that year13.
Why we do not publish a single State Farm complaint number. State Farm writes personal auto through several separately rated underwriting subsidiaries. NAIC complaint indices are reported per company per year. A given state may see very different indices from two different State Farm entities in the same year. Rolling them into a single national "State Farm" index papers over that variation.
The honest way to check for your state. Use the NAIC Consumer Information Source lookup at content.naic.org/consumer.htm and search for the specific State Farm entity that would write your policy in your state13. That single lookup produces a cleaner signal than any national aggregate.
Financial strength
On November 14, 2025, AM Best downgraded the Financial Strength Rating of State Farm Mutual Automobile Insurance Company and its affiliates to A+ (Superior) from A++ (Superior), and downgraded the Long-Term Issuer Credit Rating to "aa" (Superior) from "aa+" (Superior). The outlook was revised to stable from negative. AM Best attributed the action to a revision in the State Farm Group's operating performance assessment to adequate from strong, reflecting adverse underwriting experience in private-passenger auto and homeowners insurance, a challenging regulatory environment, and elevated weather-related losses1.
AM Best's Financial Strength Rating expresses an independent opinion on an insurer's ability to meet its ongoing insurance obligations to policyholders. It is not a customer-satisfaction score, a price signal, or a claims- experience signal. A+ (Superior) remains a strong rating in absolute terms; the direction of the change (from A++ to A+ in late 2025) is the honest context to attach to it.
State Farm vs. alternatives
| Dimension | State Farm | GEICO | Progressive |
|---|---|---|---|
| Distribution model | Exclusive-agent-first (~19,000 agents)5 | Predominantly direct-to-consumer | Direct plus independent agents9 |
| Telematics program | Drive Safe & Save (app + beacon; can raise premium; not in CA/MA/RI)4 | DriveEasy (smartphone app; state rules vary) | Snapshot (app or plug-in; not in CA; sign-up discount not in HI/NY) |
| Gap coverage | Not offered2 | Not offered on the standard GEICO menu | Offered as Loan/Lease Payoff, up to 25% of ACV |

YesWeSure Fit Check
Does State Farm fit your situation?
May be worth a quote if
- You prefer a named local agent for policy servicing and claim handoff, and are willing to trade a direct-to-consumer purchase experience for that relationship5.
- You are open to Drive Safe & Save, understand that it can raise your premium as well as lower it, and your state is not California, Massachusetts, or Rhode Island4.
- You have a student in the household who could qualify for the up-to-25% Good Student discount3, or a newer vehicle that could earn the Passive Restraint savings on medical-related coverage3.
- You place weight on the mutual-company structure and are comfortable with a strong A+ (Superior) AM Best rating in the wake of the November 2025 downgrade15.
Compare carefully if
- You want the highest possible AM Best rating tier. As of November 2025 State Farm carries A+ (Superior) rather than A++1.
- You need gap coverage on your vehicle from your primary insurer. State Farm's auto page states gap is not offered2.
- You want a direct-to-consumer purchase and self-service flow with no agent in the middle; State Farm's model routes many interactions through the agent5.
- You are risk-averse about telematics rate impact; Drive Safe & Save can raise your premium at renewal, not only lower it4.
Fit Check is a shortcut for the shopping decision, not advice about coverage limits. Whether a specific coverage or endorsement is right for you depends on your household and your state. Our coverage guide and, for cross-carrier questions, the car-insurance-works guide go deeper on those choices.

Is State Farm the biggest auto insurer in the U.S.?
By NAIC 2025 full-year direct-premiums-earned data, State Farm was the largest U.S. private-passenger auto insurer with a market share of 18.64%, narrowly ahead of Progressive at 18.60%8. On a trailing-twelve-month basis ending March 31, 2026, S&P Global Market Intelligence estimated Progressive briefly passed State Farm for the first time9. The two are essentially at the top of the market together.
Why did AM Best downgrade State Farm?
On November 14, 2025, AM Best downgraded State Farm's Financial Strength Rating from A++ (Superior) to A+ (Superior). AM Best cited a revision in the group's operating performance assessment to adequate from strong, driven by adverse underwriting in private-passenger auto and homeowners, a challenging regulatory environment, and elevated weather-related losses1. A+ (Superior) remains a strong rating in absolute terms; the direction of the change is the honest context.
Does Drive Safe & Save raise rates?
State Farm states that premium is re-adjusted at each policy renewal (typically every six months) using up to the prior 12 months of driving data, and that the adjustment can be a discount or a surcharge. State Farm specifically notes that if annual mileage exceeds 7,500 miles, premium may increase4. Drive Safe & Save is therefore not a discount-only program.
Does State Farm offer gap insurance?
State Farm's auto insurance page states that gap insurance is not part of the State Farm coverage menu and is typically offered by the auto loan provider2. If you finance or lease a vehicle and your lender requires gap-style coverage, ask the lender whether a third-party gap product satisfies the requirement.
Is Drive Safe & Save available in every state?
No. State Farm states that Drive Safe & Save is not available in California, Massachusetts, or Rhode Island; a discount may not be available in North Carolina depending on individual facts and circumstances; and New York is capped at 30%4.
How should I read State Farm's NAIC complaint numbers?
State Farm writes personal auto through several separately rated underwriting subsidiaries. NAIC complaint indices are reported per company per year13. A single national State Farm index papers over meaningful variation between subsidiaries and between states. The most honest read is to look up the specific State Farm entity that would write your policy in your state at NAIC's Consumer Information Source directly.
