Cheapest Car Insurance (2026)

By YesWeSure EditorialReviewed October 3, 2026Editorial standardsReport an errorSources

There is no single "cheapest" car insurance carrier. The cheapest quote for a 22-year-old high-risk shopper, a 35-year-old military veteran, and a 68-year-old AARP-eligible retiree come from three different carriers. Below are the six most common shopper profiles and the carrier that most often leads on price for each. Match your profile to the row, then shop the suggested carrier against one or two of the alternatives linked.

By shopper profile

ProfileCheapest-most-oftenWhy
Direct-channel clean record 25 to 60GEICODirect pricing, large discount menu, DriveEasy telematics option. Among the cheapest full-coverage quotes for a clean 35-year-old in most states.
IA channel, middle-aged clean recordTravelersA++ Superior with low per-year quotes for a clean record. IntelliDrive telematics and Premier Responsible Driver Plan add further savings.
Military-affiliated shopperUSAAConsistently the cheapest full-coverage quote for the eligible group. Military-storage, deployment, and on-base garaging discounts.
Bad credit (states where credit is rated)MercuryPublished rates for the low-credit-score tier average 35 percent below industry average. California budget-value specialist. 11-state IA footprint.
Regional (12-state footprint: PA, OH, VA, IL, IN, KY, MD, NC, TN, WV, WI, NY)ErieRate Lock product keeps the quote level year-over-year. J.D. Power 2025 #1 Auto Claims Satisfaction. YourTurn rewards-only app.
High-risk (SR-22, DUI, lapsed)ProgressiveStandard-market SR-22 posture: writes the business at non-standard rates but with the broader coverage menu of a mainstream carrier.

How "cheap" depends on what you buy

  • Minimum coverage vs full coverage. Minimum liability can be had for under $500 per year in low-cost states; full coverage averages 2 to 3 times that. See cheapest full-coverage carriers and how much is full coverage.
  • Liability limits. A 25/50/25 policy is cheaper than 100/300/50 by 10 to 30 percent, but the lower limit routinely exhausts in a single serious crash and exposes you to a judgment lien.
  • Deductible. Moving from $500 to $1,000 cuts collision + comprehensive premium by about 10 percent. Only sensible if you have the cash to cover the higher deductible without borrowing.
  • Telematics. Enroll if your driving data is favorable; rewards-only programs (Nationwide SmartRide tier, Erie YourTurn) cannot raise the rate. Two-way programs can.
