Review methodology
How we score carriers
Every carrier is rated on the same eight-dimension rubric. Weights and inputs are public.
The rubric
Each carrier receives a score from 0.0 to 5.0 on each of the following dimensions. Overall score is a weighted average.
- Pricing — Rate competitiveness across driver profiles, states, and coverage tiers. Sourced from public rate filings.
- Coverage — Breadth of standard and optional coverages available in most states.
- Discounts — Availability and depth of legitimate discounts (safe driver, multi-policy, etc.).
- Availability — Number of states served and any relevant restrictions.
- Claims experience — NAIC complaint index and public claims data.
- Customer experience — Verified customer research and independent surveys.
- Digital experience — Web and mobile app usability review.
- Financial strength — A.M. Best and S&P ratings.
How ties are broken
When two carriers score identically on the overall rubric, we break ties by ranking on pricing first, then customer experience.
Refresh cadence
We refresh scores at least twice a year, or more often when material events occur (rate filings, complaint spikes, financial-strength downgrades).
