Best Car Insurance for College Students

By YesWeSure EditorialReviewed October 3, 2026Editorial standardsReport an errorSources

A college student is almost always cheapest to insure on a parent policy with the Distant Student discount active (available if the student is 100+ miles from the garaged vehicle for most of the year). Stacking Good Student, Driver Training, and multi-car household discounts can cut the student's share of the household premium by 30 to 45 percent. A stand-alone policy at the same carrier for the same coverage typically costs 2x to 3x.

  • Distant Student (Away at School): 15 to 35 percent off the student's portion when 100+ miles from the vehicle and not driving regularly.
  • Good Student: 10 to 25 percent for B average or GPA 3.0, documented.
  • Driver training / defensive-driving course: 5 to 10 percent.
  • Multi-car household: 10 to 25 percent on the household aggregate premium.

When to switch to a stand-alone policy

  • Student is 25+ and lives at a different address full-time.
  • Student owns the vehicle outright and the parent is not on the title.
  • Parent carrier declines to retain the student at renewal (rare but can happen after a student at-fault incident).
