Best Car Insurance for New Drivers

By YesWeSure EditorialReviewed October 3, 2026Editorial standardsReport an errorSources

A "new driver" is anyone with less than roughly 3 years of licensed driving history, regardless of age. A 35-year-old who just got licensed pays a surcharge for the same reason an 18-year-old does: insurers lack the loss-ratio data to price the risk precisely. The shortlist below is tuned to the new-driver profile specifically. If you're a teen, see our best for teens list. If you're taking out your first standalone policy, see first-time buyer.

The new-driver discount stack

  • Good-student discount: 10 to 15 percent if the driver maintains a B average or GPA 3.0.
  • Driver-education or defensive-driving course: 5 to 10 percent at most mainstream carriers.
  • Multi-car household inclusion: adding to an existing household policy is typically 30 to 50 percent cheaper than a stand-alone policy for the same coverage.
  • Discount-only telematics: KnowYourDrive (American Family), SafePilot (USAA), YourTurn (Erie) cannot raise the new driver's rate.
