Best Car Insurance for Military Members and Veterans

By YesWeSure EditorialReviewed October 3, 2026Editorial standardsReport an errorSources

For most USAA-eligible military and veteran households, USAA is the right answer. The published rate benchmarks, the military-specific features, and the A++ Superior financial strength combine to make a durable advantage over the open market. Where USAA eligibility is unclear or does not apply, GEICO (with its military-and-federal-employee discount) is the most common honest substitute. For dual-eligible shoppers (AARP + USAA, or profession-affiliated + military), Hartford or California Casualty can beat USAA on specific terms.

USAAAny USAA-eligible household (active duty, veteran, qualifying family)A++ Superior, consistently below-national-average full coverage for the eligible group. Vehicle-storage discount up to 60 percent while deployed, military-base garaging discount, and SafePilot telematics that cannot raise your rate. Multi-decade customer retention across active duty and retired service.Closed membership: active-duty, veteran, National Guard, Reserves, Officer Candidate, and qualifying family (spouse, unmarried children of USAA members, and widows/widowers of members). Many assume USAA eligibility is tighter than it actually is.

The Hartford (AARP)Veteran age 50+ (dual eligible with AARP)For a USAA-eligible veteran 50+, Hartford's AARP program layers RecoverCare, Lifetime Renewability, and Disappearing Deductible on top. USAA eligibility: wider than most assume

USAA membership is open to:

  • Active-duty members of all U.S. military branches.
  • National Guard and Reserve members.
  • Officer Candidates (including ROTC advanced-course cadets and midshipmen).
  • Veterans who were honorably discharged after separation.
  • Spouses of USAA members, unmarried widows and widowers of USAA members who had USAA auto or property, and unmarried children of USAA members.

The eligibility is lifetime once established, which is why multi-decade retention is one of USAA's defining features. If a parent or grandparent was a USAA member, children often qualify.

Military-specific features that actually matter

  • Vehicle-storage discount while deployed. USAA, GEICO (deployment), and some mainstream carriers offer substantial discounts (up to 60 percent at USAA) for a stored vehicle that is garaged and not driven for 30+ days.
  • Deployed-driver policies. Household coverage that remains in force while the primary driver is deployed, without triggering a lapse-of-coverage flag.
  • On-base garaging rate zone. USAA rates on-base garaging favorably in zip-code-sensitive states (TX, VA, CA especially).
