Best Car Insurance for High-Risk Drivers

By YesWeSure EditorialReviewed October 3, 2026Editorial standardsReport an errorSources

A "high-risk" driver in the insurance market usually means one or more of: an SR-22 or FR-44 filing requirement, a recent DUI (within 5 years), multiple at-fault accidents in a short window, a coverage lapse, a license suspension, or a reckless driving conviction. Mainstream carriers often decline new business for these profiles; the non-standard specialists below do not. On a one-event clean-otherwise record Progressive routinely beats the pure specialists; on a multi-event or long-lookback record one of the specialists typically wins.

How to decide between them

  • Single-event, clean-otherwise record: start with Progressive. The broader coverage menu and standard-market posture usually win.
  • Multiple events or long lookback: go to the Sentry book (Dairyland or The General) or Kemper for CA/FL/TX. These carriers accept risks the mainstream decline.
  • Need an SR-22 but no vehicle: Dairyland and Bristol West both write non-owner SR-22 policies. See SR-22 coverage.
  • Non-owner FR-44 in Florida or Virginia: Dairyland offers same-day electronic filing.
  • IA channel preferred: Dairyland or Bristol West. Both work only through independent agents.
  • DTC bind-today urgency: The General, Direct Auto (NatGen sibling), and Kemper (via Infinity in Spanish-language markets).

The cost math

Expect a 50 to 100 percent surcharge over the clean-record baseline for a first DUI, 60 to 90 percent for 2 at-fault accidents in 3 years, and 40 to 70 percent for an insurance-coverage lapse. SR-22 filing fee itself is $15 to $25; the premium impact is driven by the triggering event, not the SR-22. See our cost after a DUI page for the full 3-year math.
