Progressive Car Insurance Discounts: Full List, Snapshot, State Caveats
Short answer
Progressive organizes auto discounts across six practical groups: driving history, policy structure, telematics (Snapshot), enrollment and payment behavior, education, and household composition. The structurally largest discounts for most drivers are Multi-Policy bundling, Multi-Vehicle, Snapshot (which can either discount or surcharge the policy), Homeowner, and Pay in Full. Progressive publishes discount availability on its auto discounts page but does not uniformly publish fixed percentage caps because the applied amount is state- filed, so the realistic read on any Progressive quote is that advertised discount language is directional, not guaranteed.1
What actually determines whether a Progressive discount applies to you
- State. Progressive files discount amounts state by state. Snapshot specifically is not available in California and is not offered as a sign-up (participation) discount in New York2.
- Snapshot carries two-way risk. Unlike a fixed discount, Snapshot can produce a surcharge at the end of the measurement window. Progressive publicly discloses that about 2 in 10 drivers see a rate increase at the end of the program2.
- Documentation. Good Student needs a transcript or registrar form. Distant Student needs proof the student is enrolled at least 100 miles away and does not have the vehicle. Homeowner needs proof of homeownership.
- Enrollment path. Online Quote, Sign Online, Paperless, and Automatic Payments are effectively a bundle of small discounts for using the digital channel. These apply only if you actually use that channel.
- Stacking. Discounts apply multiplicatively, so the combined savings is always smaller than the sum of individual discount percentages.
The Progressive discount list
The table below groups Progressive’s named auto discounts by category and lists the eligibility rule for each. Progressive publishes discount availability on its auto discounts page but files specific percentages state by state, so the published-cap column reflects Progressive’s own language ("varies by state") rather than a national guaranteed number1.
| Discount | Category | Eligibility | Published cap |
|---|---|---|---|
| Multi-Policy (bundling) | Policy structure | Progressive auto plus a Progressive or affiliated-carrier home, renters, condo, or life policy. | Varies by state |
| Multi-Vehicle | Policy structure | Two or more vehicles insured on the same Progressive policy. | Varies by state |
| Snapshot (participation) | Driving behavior (telematics) | Enrolled in Snapshot with the mobile app or plug-in device at the start of a Progressive policy. Not available in California; not offered in New York as a sign-up discount. | Varies by state |
| Snapshot (post-program) | Driving behavior (telematics) | Measured safe driving over the roughly six-month Snapshot measurement window. Can also produce a surcharge if measured driving is high-risk. | Varies by state |
| Continuous Insurance | Driving history | Prior continuous auto coverage with any carrier at the time Progressive quotes the policy. Longer continuous coverage improves the applied discount. | Varies by state |
| Homeowner | Policy structure | Current homeowner, even if the home is not insured with Progressive. | Varies by state |
| Online Quote | Enrollment | Starting the quote on progressive.com rather than by phone. | Varies by state |
| Sign Online | Enrollment | Signing policy documents electronically rather than returning paper documents. | Varies by state |
| Paperless | Enrollment | Opting in to electronic delivery of policy documents and billing. | Varies by state |
| Automatic Payments (EFT) | Payment method | Enrolling in recurring automatic payment from a bank account or card. | Varies by state |
| Pay in Full | Payment method | Paying the full six-month policy premium at bind rather than monthly installments. | Varies by state |
| Good Student | Education | Full-time high school or college student under 23 maintaining a B average, 3.0 GPA, or equivalent. | Varies by state |
| Distant Student | Education | Student listed on a parent policy who attends school at least 100 miles from the garaged vehicle and does not take the vehicle to school. | Varies by state |
| Teen Driver | Household | Policy with at least one driver under 18 on the policy. | Varies by state |
| Deductible Rewards | Driving history | Available in participating states. Reduces collision deductible for each policy period without an at-fault accident or violation. | Up to a stated per-period reduction |
Snapshot: the two-way discount
Snapshot is the single Progressive discount that behaves differently from the rest. It has two components:
- Participation discount. Applied at Snapshot enrollment to new Progressive customers. The participation (sign-up) discount is not available in New York per Progressive’s own program disclosures2.
- Post-program discount or surcharge. Applied at the renewal after roughly six months of measurement. Measured safe driving produces a discount; measured high-risk driving (hard braking, late-night driving, phone handling, excessive mileage) can produce a rate increase. Progressive discloses that about 2 in 10 drivers see a surcharge rather than a discount at program end2.
Because Snapshot is two-way, it is structurally different from a fixed discount like Multi-Vehicle or Homeowner. See our full Progressive Snapshot explainer for mechanics, state availability, and fit criteria. Snapshot is not available in California under the Proposition 103 framework.
Where specific discounts have deeper mechanics
- Multi-Policy bundling. Progressive brokers home and renters coverage both through its own carriers and through affiliated carriers (ASI and others). The bundle discount applies when Progressive binds both policies, regardless of which affiliated carrier actually underwrites the home side. Realistic bundle savings depend on both base rates.
- Continuous Insurance. This discount rewards drivers who already have active auto coverage with another carrier at the moment Progressive quotes. A gap in coverage reduces the discount. Longer continuous history improves it.
- Homeowner. Being a homeowner reduces the Progressive auto premium even when the home is not insured with Progressive. The reason is actuarial: homeowners are a statistically lower-risk auto cohort. You still need proof of ownership at bind.
- Distant Student. Available on policies with a listed student driver attending school at least 100 miles away and not taking the vehicle. This is structurally a "don’t count this driver fully" discount, which is why the mileage and vehicle-access conditions are strict.
- Teen Driver. Progressive files a Teen Driver discount in some states for policies with a driver under 18. Depending on state, it stacks with Good Student.
- Deductible Rewards. Not a premium discount but a deductible-reduction program: each policy period without an at-fault accident or violation reduces the collision deductible by a filed amount, up to a cap. Availability varies by state.
How Progressive discounts interact with your actual quote
Three things matter in practice:
- Discounts stack multiplicatively, not additively. A policy with four discounts of 10%, 10%, 15%, and 20% does not come out at 55% off; the combined effective discount after multiplicative stacking is roughly 45%.
- State filings decide the applied amount. Progressive files per state, so the same named discount can apply at different percentages depending on where the policy is rated. The quote tool applies filed amounts automatically.
- Snapshot is a different kind of lever. Snapshot can increase premium at the end of the measurement window, so stacking it in with the fixed discounts changes the expected value of the overall package2.

What to actually do with this list
- Audit your current Progressive policy against the list. If you moved, bought a home, bundled renters, had a child who became a Distant Student, or started paying semi-annually in full, you may have earned a discount Progressive has not applied.
- Decide whether Snapshot is worth the risk. If you drive late at night routinely or your household drives above 15,000 miles a year, Snapshot’s expected value is lower than Progressive’s marketing suggests. See the Snapshot explainer.
- Compare the final Progressive quote with competitors. A heavily-discounted Progressive policy can still sit above a competitor’s base price. See our cheapest car insurance shortlist for the comparison set.
- Confirm the paperless and auto-pay discounts match your actual billing choice. These are easy to miss and easy to lose if you switch billing preferences mid-term.

Common follow-up questions
How much do Progressive bundle discounts actually save?
Progressive publishes bundle availability but files the percentage state by state. The practical bundle savings versus two unbundled policies depends on both base rates and on homeowners / renters pricing in your market. Compare the bundled quote against standalone quotes before assuming the bundle is cheaper1.
Does Progressive have a military discount?
Progressive offers specific affiliation programs through its direct channel, but a named carrier-wide military discount is not the structural equivalent of GEICO’s military program. For a dedicated military-focused comparison, see our best car insurance for military shortlist.
Can I combine Snapshot with other Progressive discounts?
Yes. Snapshot stacks with fixed discounts like Multi- Policy, Multi-Vehicle, and Homeowner. The combined outcome depends on measured driving: Snapshot can increase premium at the end of the measurement window even if your other discounts are solid2.
Is Progressive’s Pay in Full discount worth it?
It depends on cash flow. The Pay in Full discount reduces the premium for paying the full six-month term at bind. If the alternative is paying in monthly installments that each carry a small installment fee, paying in full often comes out ahead at renewal time.
Are Progressive discounts the same in every state?
No. Progressive files discount amounts and availability state by state. Snapshot specifically is not available in California and does not offer the participation discount in New York. Several other discount availability lines are participating-state only12.
