Kia Car Insurance: Theft Epidemic, Software Fix, Current Lineup

By YesWeSure EditorialReviewed October 9, 2026Editorial standardsSources

Short answer

The dominant Kia insurance story is a theft problem that started with hardware, not driving behavior. Many 2015-2019 Kia vehicles sold with a mechanical key shipped without a standard engine immobilizer, which made them unusually easy to hot-wire. The resulting theft wave, amplified on TikTok from 2022 through 2024, pushed HLDI theft losses on affected model years above the all-vehicle average by a wide margin and put several Kia models on recent NICB top-stolen lists. Kia began rolling out a free anti-theft software update in February 2023 and settled a class-action in 2024. The 2022 and later lineup is not affected, and the EV6 and EV9 have IIHS Top Safety Pick history.123

What moves a Kia quote today

  • Model year and whether the VIN is on the affected list. 2015-2019 mechanical-key trims carry a very different comprehensive-premium profile than 2022+ trims with standard immobilizers1.
  • Whether the software update has been applied. Carriers increasingly ask about update status at policy binding on affected VINs. Some have reduced restrictions after the update is confirmed.
  • Garaging ZIP. Theft exposure for Kia 2015-2019 models is highly concentrated in specific metros. Comprehensive premium on an affected VIN moves far more by ZIP than by driver record.
  • Powertrain on current models. On Sportage, Sorento, and Niro the Hybrid and PHEV trims carry a modest step up in collision and comprehensive premium versus the gasoline trim.
  • EV vs gasoline. EV6 and EV9 run above the gasoline Kia average on collision and comprehensive because of battery-pack replacement and sensor density.

The 2015-2019 theft epidemic: what actually happened

For a stretch of model years, Kia (and sister brand Hyundai) sold a large number of U.S. vehicles with a mechanical ignition key and no engine immobilizer. An immobilizer is a chip in the key that the car recognizes before it allows the engine to start; without one, the ignition cylinder itself is the only barrier to starting the car. Beginning in 2022, a method for defeating that cylinder with a common USB-A connector spread on social media, and the theft numbers for the affected model years rose sharply.

HLDI documented the pattern in a theft-loss bulletin covering 2015-2019 Kia and Hyundai vehicles without immobilizers, reporting whole-vehicle theft loss indices well above the all-vehicle average for those model years1. NICB Hot Wheels reports in 2024 and 2025 placed Kia models (notably Optima, Sportage, and Soul) on the most-stolen lists for those model years2. For a buyer or current owner, the consequence is specific: comprehensive premium on an affected VIN runs materially above the segment average, and some carriers restricted new comprehensive binding in certain metros during the peak of the trend.

The software update, and what it changes

Kia began rolling out a free anti-theft software update in February 2023. The update modifies the vehicle’s theft alarm software so the ignition does not operate unless the key fob is used to unlock the vehicle; it also extends the alarm sound duration. The update is distributed by Kia dealers at no cost to the owner3. For a shopper, the practical points to confirm with the seller or current carrier are two: (1) whether the VIN is on the affected list, and (2) whether the update has been installed. Some carriers will adjust comprehensive premium or lift new-business restrictions once the update is confirmed; practice varies by carrier and state.

The 2024 class-action settlement in In re Kia Hyundai Vehicle Theft Litigation provided reimbursement for certain out-of-pocket theft losses and insurance premium increases on affected VINs, subject to the settlement terms. Current and former owners should check the settlement documents directly for eligibility and claim deadlines.

ForteSmall sedan2015-2019 trims with mechanical key are on the affected-VIN list for the theft software update. 2020+ varies by trim; 2022+ ships with standard immobilizer.
Optima and K5Mid-size sedan (Optima retired after 2020, replaced by K5)2015-2020 Optima mechanical-key trims appear on both HLDI theft bulletins and NICB top-stolen reporting. K5 (2021+) ships with standard immobilizer.
SoulBoxy subcompact2015-2019 Soul trims heavily represented in the Kia theft epidemic. 2022+ Soul is not affected.
SportageCompact SUV (gasoline, Hybrid, Plug-in Hybrid)2015-2019 Sportage sits on the affected VIN list. Current (2023+) Sportage is a new generation with standard immobilizer; Hybrid and PHEV trims step up collision and comprehensive premium.
SorentoThree-row mid-size SUV (gasoline, Hybrid, Plug-in Hybrid)Family-SUV segment. Hybrid and PHEV trims add battery-pack and sensor repair cost at a collision.
TellurideThree-row large SUVIIHS award history is strong at the segment. Higher sticker and higher collision claim severity lift collision premium.
EV6Electric crossover (E-GMP platform)EV6 has IIHS Top Safety Pick history. EV collision and comprehensive premium runs above the gasoline Sportage because of battery-pack replacement cost and sensor density.
EV9Three-row electric SUVLarger battery, higher sticker, and higher sensor repair cost at a collision. The highest-insurance-cost Kia on the current lineup for most driver profiles.
CarnivalMinivanMinivan segment carries below-average collision frequency; collision premium is modest relative to a three-row SUV.

The 2022 and later Kia lineup ships with engine immobilizers as standard equipment, so the theft epidemic is a specific issue tied to specific model years and not a brand-wide profile on current vehicles1. IIHS awards on current Kia models

IIHS has recognized the EV6 and EV9 with Top Safety Pick status in recent award cycles, with specific trim and headlight qualifications that are tracked on the IIHS vehicle pages4. Telluride has strong historical ratings in the large-SUV segment. For a safety-focused buyer the current- generation lineup is a different conversation than the 2015-2019 vehicles the theft story is about, and the IIHS vehicle page should always be the source of truth for a specific build.

How to actually shop Kia coverage

  1. Confirm model year and VIN status before you quote. If you are buying used, check whether the VIN is on the affected list and whether the Kia anti-theft software update has been applied3.
  2. Pull three quotes with identical limits and deductibles. GEICO, Progressive, and State Farm give you a span across the main distribution models. On affected VINs the comprehensive premium delta between carriers is often larger than on unaffected vehicles.
  3. Ask directly about affected-VIN restrictions. Carrier practice varies by state and has changed as the software update rollout progressed. Confirm the carrier writes new comprehensive on your specific year and model.
  4. Compare EV against gasoline on current models. EV6 and EV9 will quote above a comparable gasoline Sportage or Telluride on collision and comprehensive. See our collision coverage guide for the framework.
  5. Confirm liability limits on three-row SUVs. Telluride and EV9 households are often multi-driver, which is a prompt to review how to choose coverage limits.

Common follow-up questions

Is every Kia a theft risk?

No. The theft issue is tied to specific 2015-2019 model-year vehicles that shipped with a mechanical key and no engine immobilizer. The 2022 and later Kia lineup includes standard immobilizers and is not part of the same risk profile1.

Will an insurer refuse to write a 2017 Optima today?

Carrier practice varies by state and has shifted as the software update has reached more vehicles. Some carriers that paused new comprehensive binding during the peak of the trend have resumed with conditions; others still restrict certain ZIPs. Confirm with each carrier directly for your specific VIN.

Does the software update lower my premium?

Not automatically. The update makes the vehicle harder to steal, which over time feeds into HLDI theft-loss data and into carrier filings. Several carriers have adjusted comprehensive premium on confirmed-updated VINs, but practice varies. Ask your carrier what documentation they need3.

Is Kia insurance cheaper than Hyundai insurance?

The two brands share a platform family and share the theft story on affected model years. Model and trim differences inside each brand swamp the brand-level delta. Compare at the model level across both: Hyundai car insurance.

Is the EV6 expensive to insure?

It carries higher collision and comprehensive premium than a comparable gasoline Sportage, mostly because of battery- pack replacement cost and sensor repair cost after a collision. Within the EV crossover segment it is competitive.
