Esurance Explained: Retired Allstate Brand

By YesWeSure EditorialReviewed October 2, 2026Editorial standardsReport an error

Esurance is no longer writing new personal-auto policies. Allstate acquired Esurance in 2011 and announced in December 2019 that it would retire the brand as part of its Transformative Growth Plan. The wind-down rolled out state-by-state through 2020-2023. Existing Esurance policyholders continue to be serviced at esurance.com; new shoppers are routed to the Allstate brand. This page is not a review: Esurance no longer exists as a quote target.

Where should a shopper go?

  • Looking for a new direct auto quote? Allstate's direct and agent channels are the Esurance successor; see our Allstate review.
  • Current Esurance customer? Your policy continues to be serviced at esurance.com for claims, billing, policy management, and ID cards. At renewal, Allstate may offer a replacement policy under the Allstate, National General, Encompass, or (in some zip codes) Direct Auto brands subject to eligibility: none of these are automatic.
  • Looking for a non-standard Allstate option? National General, acquired by Allstate in January 2021, is the Allstate-corporate non-standard writer. See our National General review.

What actually happened

  • 1999: Esurance founded as a pure-direct online auto insurance brand.
  • October 7, 2011: Allstate completed its acquisition of White Mountains Insurance Group's Answer Financial / Esurance businesses for approximately $1.0 billion. Esurance became an Allstate subsidiary.
  • December 19, 2019: Allstate announced the Transformative Growth Plan, including the retirement of the Esurance brand and the consolidation of Allstate, Encompass, and Answer Financial into a single direct-plus-agent business model.
  • 2020-2023: Esurance stopped writing new personal-auto policies on a state-by-state wind-down schedule. There is no single primary-source nationwide "last day"; trade-press reporting commonly cites early 2023 as the effective end for new policy sales.
  • Today (2026): esurance.com remains live as an existing-customer servicing portal. New-quote flows redirect to Allstate (and in some ZIP codes to Direct Auto, another Allstate brand). Esurance Property and Casualty Insurance Company still appears as a licensed entity in state filings.

FAQ

Is Esurance still around?

Not for new business. The brand was retired starting with Allstate's December 2019 Transformative Growth Plan announcement; new policy sales wound down state-by-state through 2020-2023. Existing policies continue to be serviced at esurance.com.

Can I still get an Esurance quote?

No. Quote flows that previously went to Esurance now route to Allstate (or, in some ZIPs, Direct Auto). If you want the Esurance direct-channel experience, Allstate's direct quote is the closest successor at the same corporate parent.

Will my existing Esurance policy be cancelled?

Not force-cancelled. Existing Esurance policies continue to be serviced at esurance.com. At renewal, Allstate may offer a replacement under the Allstate, National General, Encompass, or Direct Auto brands: subject to eligibility. If no replacement is accepted, your Esurance policy may non-renew at the end of its current term; call Esurance servicing to confirm your specific state and policy status.

Does Allstate own Esurance?

Yes. Allstate acquired Esurance from White Mountains Insurance Group on October 7, 2011 for approximately $1.0B. Esurance has remained an Allstate subsidiary since.
