AAA Auto Insurance Explained — The Three Federations

By YesWeSure EditorialReviewed October 2, 2026Editorial standardsReport an error

AAA auto insurance is not one national insurer. Three unrelated U.S. insurance federations write personal auto under the AAA brand: Auto Club Enterprises (ACE), CSAA Insurance Group, and Auto Club Group (ACG). Each has its own AM Best rating, complaint record, and telematics program. This explainer is NOT a provider review; it maps each federation to its states so you can read the right review and buy from the correct AAA federation.

Why this matters

A publisher review that quotes "AAA" without naming the federation is often inaccurate for your state — the three federations have different rate schedules, different AM Best actions in 2024-2026, and materially different telematics programs. ACE and CSAA telematics are discount-only. Auto Club Group's AAADrive is a two-way UBI that can raise rates at renewal.

The three AAA federations

1. Auto Club Enterprises (ACE / AAA Southern California)

  • Home club: Automobile Club of Southern California (ACSC), founded 1900.
  • Primary PPA writer: Interinsurance Exchange of the Automobile Club (NAIC #15598); NAIC Group #1318.
  • States (20): Alabama, Arkansas, California, Hawaii, Illinois, Indiana, Kansas, Kentucky, Louisiana, Maine, Mississippi, Missouri, New Hampshire, New Mexico, Ohio, Pennsylvania, Texas, Virginia, Vermont, West Virginia.
  • 2024 share: 1.80% group PPA DWP (largest of the three AAA federations); rank #9 nationally.
  • AM Best: A+ (Superior); aa- ICR; affirmed April 29, 2026; Stable outlook.
  • J.D. Power 2025: California region #1 at score 676 (second consecutive year).
  • Material 2024 event: Wawanesa U.S. acquisition closed March 31, 2024; book rebranded as W Insurance.

2. CSAA Insurance Group (AAA Northern California + Club Alliance + 20 affiliates)

  • Home club: AAA Northern California, Nevada & Utah (NCNU); spun out from NCNU in 2010; HQ Walnut Creek, CA.
  • Primary PPA writer: CSAA Insurance Exchange plus pooled subsidiaries; NAIC Group #1278.
  • States (23 + DC): Arizona, California, Colorado, Connecticut, Delaware, Idaho, Indiana, Kansas, Kentucky, Maryland, Montana, Nevada, New Jersey, New York, Ohio, Oklahoma, Oregon, Pennsylvania, South Dakota, Utah, Virginia, West Virginia, Wyoming, DC.
  • 2024 share: 1.33% group PPA DWP; rank #14 nationally.
  • AM Best: A (Excellent); a+ ICR; outlook restored to Stable from Negative on July 23, 2025 after a February 2025 $500M surplus notes issuance.
  • J.D. Power 2025: Southwest region #1 at score 676 (second consecutive year).
  • Telematics: MySafeDrive — discount-only; data not used to raise premium.

3. Auto Club Group (ACG / AAA Michigan + Midwest + Southeast)

  • Home club: AAA Michigan; second-largest AAA club in North America (~14M members).
  • Primary PPA writer: Auto Club Insurance Association (NAIC #21202, Michigan-domiciled reciprocal); NAIC Group Code 55.
  • States (14): Colorado, Florida, Georgia, Illinois (most of), Indiana (northern), Iowa, Michigan, Minnesota (most of), Nebraska, North Carolina, North Dakota, South Carolina, Tennessee, Wisconsin. Plus Puerto Rico, USVI, and Quebec.
  • 2024 share: ~0.40% group PPA DWP; third-largest of the three AAA federations.
  • AM Best: A (Excellent); a ICR; outlook restored to Stable from Negative on April 16, 2025 after 2023-2024 Southeast catastrophe exposure. Auto Club Florida Group separately rated A- (Excellent) / a- Stable.
  • J.D. Power 2025: U.S. Insurance Shopping Study #2 overall at 707; #1 for Digital Insurance Shopping Experience.
  • Michigan no-fault: ACG offers every PIP tier under 2019 Michigan reform. Michigan is historically ACG's largest state.
  • Telematics: AAADrive — TWO-WAY UBI; the Household UBI Score can increase or decrease premium at renewal.

Which AAA federation serves your address?

Match your home state to the federation that writes AAA auto there:

Auto Club Enterprises (ACE / AAA SoCal) — 20 states

Alabama, Arkansas, California (Southern California only; Northern California is CSAA), Hawaii, Illinois, Indiana, Kansas, Kentucky, Louisiana, Maine, Mississippi, Missouri, New Hampshire, New Mexico, Ohio, Pennsylvania, Texas, Virginia, Vermont, West Virginia.

CSAA Insurance Group — 23 states + DC

Arizona, California (Northern California), Colorado, Connecticut, Delaware, Idaho, Indiana (parts of), Kansas, Kentucky, Maryland, Montana, Nevada, New Jersey, New York, Ohio, Oklahoma, Oregon, Pennsylvania, South Dakota, Utah, Virginia, West Virginia, Wyoming, and Washington, D.C.

Auto Club Group (ACG / AAA Michigan) — 14 states

Colorado, Florida, Georgia, Illinois (most of), Indiana (northern), Iowa, Michigan, Minnesota (most of), Nebraska, North Carolina, North Dakota, South Carolina, Tennessee, Wisconsin.

Overlap note

Some states appear in more than one list because different parts of the state are served by different federations (e.g. California north vs south; Illinois east vs the rest; Indiana north vs the rest). Your specific home address determines which federation writes the policy. When in doubt, start at AAA.com and enter your ZIP — the site will route you to the correct club.

Common review-shopping mistakes

  • Citing a generic "AAA" rate anchor. Publisher reviews that list "AAA" in a California table are usually quoting CSAA (AAA NorCal), not ACE (AAA SoCal). The same ambiguity exists for ACG. Match the federation to your state before using the rate as a benchmark.
  • Comparing AAA to itself across federations. ACE won J.D. Power 2025 in California at 676. CSAA won J.D. Power 2025 in the Southwest at 676. ACG topped J.D. Power 2025 Insurance Shopping Study at 707. These are three different carriers, not one AAA. A reader in Michigan comparing "AAA California J.D. Power score" is comparing the wrong product.
  • Assuming AAA telematics is the same across federations. ACE and CSAA telematics are discount-only. ACG's AAADrive is a two-way UBI that can raise rates at renewal. This matters for the fit-check decision.

Do I need AAA membership to buy any AAA auto insurance?

Yes, for all three federations. An active AAA membership in a club served by the federation is required to purchase and maintain the auto policy. The membership fee is not a discount line; price the AAA membership separately from any insurance quote.

Why this is not a provider review

This page intentionally does NOT carry Article, Review, AggregateRating, or FAQPage structured data because:

  • There is no single "AAA" insurer to review; applying Review schema would mislead search engines.
  • Combining financial-strength ratings, complaint data, or claims-satisfaction scores across the three federations would be factually wrong.
  • The three federations have different NAIC codes, different AM Best actions, and different telematics programs.

For editorial decisions, read the federation-specific review that applies to your state.
