21st Century Insurance Explained: Wound Down by Farmers
21st Century Insurance is not writing new personal-auto policies. Farmers Group (owner since 2009) stopped new business outside California and Hawaii effective January 1, 2017; stopped all new and renewal business in 2018 except New York statutory renewals. Three of 21st Century's legal entities were sold out of Farmers' holding system on January 1, 2022; a fourth entity (21st Century Advantage Insurance Company) was sold on April 1, 2023. The brand is not a quote target in 2026 under Farmers; whether any sold-off shells are writing under new owners is not clear from Tier-1 sources. This page is not a review.
Where should a shopper go?
- Looking for a new personal-auto quote? Farmers Group is 21st Century's former corporate parent; the current Farmers direct-channel brand is Toggle (a Farmers Group direct-digital brand). The Farmers agent-channel product is the primary Farmers successor. See our Farmers review.
- Current 21st Century customer in NY? New York statutory renewals continued at some entities through the wind-down. Contact your 21st Century servicing line (or Farmers servicing if your policy transferred) to confirm your current entity and renewal status.
- Looking for a different direct-channel option? GEICO, Progressive, and Liberty Mutual are the mainstream direct-channel alternatives at a competing counterparty tier; see our GEICO review, Progressive review, and Liberty Mutual review.
What actually happened
- 1958: 21st Century Insurance founded as 20th Century Insurance Company (renamed to 21st Century in 1990).
- July 2009: Zurich Insurance Group (through Farmers Group, Inc.) completed its acquisition of 21st Century from AIG. 21st Century became a Farmers Group subsidiary.
- January 1, 2017: 21st Century stopped writing new business outside California and Hawaii effective this date. New York statutory renewals continued.
- 2018: 21st Century stopped all new and renewal business except New York statutory renewals. The direct-channel brand ceased to be a quote target for the general U.S. market.
- January 1, 2022: Three 21st Century legal entities were sold out of the Farmers Holding Company system: 21st Century Auto Insurance Company of New Jersey, 21st Century Indemnity Insurance Company, and 21st Century Pacific Insurance Company (per Farmers Insurance Exchange 2022 MDA filing).
- April 1, 2023: 21st Century Advantage Insurance Company was sold out of the Farmers Holding Company system (per Farmers Insurance Exchange 2023 MDA filing).
- Today (2026): 21st Century is not a quote target under Farmers. Farmers' direct-digital brand is Toggle; the agent-channel product is Farmers. Whether any sold-off 21st Century shells are writing new business under new owners is not confirmed by the Tier-1 sources we reviewed.
FAQ
Is 21st Century still around?
Not as a Farmers-owned active quote target. Farmers stopped new business outside CA and HI on January 1, 2017, stopped all new business in 2018 (NY statutory renewals excepted), and sold off four legal entities between January 2022 and April 2023. The brand name may persist on legacy policy documents or on sold-off shells under new owners, but it is not a current direct-channel quote path at Farmers.
Can I still get a 21st Century quote?
Not through Farmers. If a 21st Century-branded quote path exists in your state in 2026, it is through one of the shells sold out of Farmers' holding system (January 2022 or April 2023). Verify the writing entity on the quote before relying on anything.
Who owns 21st Century now?
Farmers Group retained some 21st Century entities through 2023. Four 21st Century legal entities were sold out of the Farmers Holding Company system: three on January 1, 2022 (21st Century Auto NJ, Indemnity, Pacific) and one on April 1, 2023 (21st Century Advantage). The buyers' identities and whether they are writing business under new ownership are not confirmed by the primary filings we reviewed.
What is Toggle?
Toggle is Farmers Group's direct-digital brand, launched by Farmers to replace the 21st Century direct-channel position. Toggle is a current Farmers Group quote target; 21st Century is not.
I still have a 21st Century policy. What should I do?
Contact your 21st Century servicing line to confirm which entity currently writes your policy, who the current servicing operator is, and your renewal status. If your policy was transferred to Farmers at renewal, Farmers servicing will have it. If your policy is on one of the sold-off shells, the new owner's servicing operator will have it.
