Tesla Car Insurance Cost (2026)

By YesWeSure EditorialReviewed October 3, 2026Editorial standardsReport an errorSources

Tesla full-coverage car insurance averages about $4,500 per year in 2026 per Insurify, compared with roughly $3,000 across all vehicles. The 1.5x premium reflects higher parts costs, labor rates for authorized Tesla service centers, and higher-than-average claim frequency. Model Y and Model 3 are the cheapest Teslas to insure; Model S and Model X trend highest. This page is about the cost; for the carrier review of Tesla Insurance itself see our Tesla Insurance review.

Average annual full-coverage by Tesla model

ModelTypical annual (full coverage)Monthly
Model 3~$3,800~$317
Model Y~$3,900~$325
Model S~$5,500~$458
Model X~$5,300~$442
Cybertruck~$5,800~$483

Anchors drawn from Insurify and MoneyGeek benchmarks for a clean-record 35-year-old carrying 100/300/50 liability + collision + comprehensive. Actual quotes vary by state, record, and model year.

Why Teslas cost more to insure

  • Parts and labor. Tesla parts have historically had limited third-party supply; authorized service center hourly rates run higher than non-luxury averages.
  • Battery pack claims. A damaged battery pack is often a total-loss trigger. ACV settlements on EV totals have been climbing.
  • ADAS calibration. Autopilot sensor recalibration after a front-end repair adds labor and parts cost not present on legacy ICE vehicles.
  • Theft frequency. Tesla theft is below average in most markets but spiked in select metros, which carriers price into comprehensive.

Carriers that lead on Tesla cost

Per Insurify and MoneyGeek 2026 Tesla-specific benchmarks: USAA (eligible), GEICO, and Auto-Owners typically lead on average annual cost across the model range. State Farm, Travelers, and American Family are consistent runners-up. Tesla Insurance itself is competitive in some states but priced using the Safety Score monthly adjustment that can raise your bill above the quoted baseline (non-California states).
