Cheapest Minimum Coverage Car Insurance

By YesWeSure EditorialReviewed October 3, 2026Editorial standardsReport an errorSources

Minimum coverage is the legal floor: just enough liability insurance to register and drive legally in your state. The national average annual minimum-coverage premium runs roughly $600 to $900 depending on which aggregator you cite. Direct carriers (GEICO, USAA where eligible) and large standard carriers (Travelers, State Farm) typically lead on minimum-coverage price. This page is about the cheapest minimum quote; our full-coverage shortlist is at cheapest full coverage.

Carriers that tend to lead on minimum coverage

  • GEICO: direct pricing, minimum-coverage quotes often in the $30 to $50 per month range for clean-record 35-year-olds in low-cost states.
  • USAA: cheapest among the mainstream carriers for the eligible group across virtually every state. Closed membership (military-family eligibility).
  • Travelers: independent-agent channel; often the cheapest IA-channel minimum-coverage benchmark for clean records 25 to 60.
  • State Farm: strong on minimum coverage when bundled with homeowners or renters. Approximately 19,000 exclusive agents.

Why minimum coverage is usually a trap

  • Low liability limits are judgment-exposure. A 25/50/25 limit (common state minimum) can exhaust in a single surgical bodily-injury claim. The driver personally owes anything above the limit.
  • No collision + comprehensive. You pay for your own car damage out of pocket after a crash, theft, or storm.
  • UM/UIM gaps. Many state minimums do not require uninsured-motorist coverage; a crash with an uninsured driver can leave you with no recovery path.
  • Lender requirements. If the car is financed, minimum coverage will not satisfy the lender's terms.

When minimum coverage actually makes sense

  • The car is paid off and worth less than roughly $3,000, you have no significant assets to protect from a judgment, and you can self-insure physical damage.
  • You carry a separate umbrella policy for the real liability layer. (Minimum underlying limits often disqualify umbrella eligibility though; verify first.)
  • Short-term bridge coverage before a replacement full policy binds.
