Tools · Decide faster

Free car-insurance tools

Three free decision tools. Math on your own numbers or verified state facts, never invented values. Each one links back to the quote funnel if you want a real quote.

THE SHORT ANSWER

A tool here is only useful if it answers a decision. Each one here takes the numbers you have (from your quote, your dec page, or your state facts file) and returns a plain verdict without inventing anything.

The three tools

TOOL · DEDUCTIBLE CALCULATOR

Deductible break-even calculator

Enter the two premium figures from your quote (one at your current deductible, one at the higher one you are considering) plus your expected claim frequency and emergency savings. Returns yearly savings, break-even years, and a plain verdict with a warning if the new deductible exceeds your savings.

TOOL · DROP FULL COVERAGE

Should I drop full coverage?

Enter the car’s current value, the yearly cost of collision + comprehensive, and the deductible. Returns the cost-to-value ratio against the 10% signal and a hard stop if the car is on a loan or lease.

TOOL · STATE REQUIREMENTS

State requirements checker

Pick a state and we show the minimum liability limits, PIP and UM/UIM rules, SR-22 / FR-44 details (if applicable), and the state’s verification system. Every row carries the source link and the date we last verified it.

TOOL · GAP INSURANCE CALCULATOR

Gap insurance: do I need it?

Enter the loan balance, car ACV, and deductible. Returns the exact gap after a total loss, whether Progressive’s 25%-of-ACV Loan/Lease Payoff cap would cover it, and a plain verdict. Also surfaces the deductible residual and the three exclusions Progressive discloses on its own gap-insurance page.

TOOL · SHOULD I FILE CLAIM

Should I file this claim?

Compare the payout (repair cost minus deductible) against the extra premium a surcharge adds over the claim-rating period. Verdicts: file it, too close to call, pay it yourself, not-at-fault file, no payout. We do not prefill a surcharge percentage because NAIC and III do not publish a nationally reliable one.

TOOL · TELEMATICS FINDER

Telematics program finder

Side-by-side disclosures for the major carrier telematics programs (Snapshot, SmartRide, Drive Safe & Save, and others): can it raise your rate, tracking length, max discount, app vs device, state restrictions. Every verified cell quotes the carrier's own wording with a source link and verified date; unverified cells show "Not disclosed; verification pending" rather than a guess.

How we built them

The two calculators (deductible, drop full coverage) do arithmetic on values you type. There are no premium tables, no rate lookups, and no defaulted dollar amounts. If the numbers on your quote are right, the verdict is right.

The state requirements checker reads only from our verified state facts files (one TypeScript module per state), so every row carries a statute or DOI link and a last-verified ISO date. For data we do not store (statutory penalty amounts for driving uninsured, which move too often to cache) the tool points at the state source rather than guessing.

All three tools are first-party, free, and server-rendered. The pages carry WebApplication and FAQPage structured data so search engines and AI assistants can surface and cite them even if a visitor never loads JavaScript.

Privacy: the tools do not transmit the dollar amounts or deductibles you type. Analytics events only carry a verdict label and the state abbreviation (for the state lookup), so we can see which decision shapes shoppers hit.
